Summer Jam 614: Photos, Pt. 1

July 24th, 2010 Alkali 1 comment

Let me say right away, I am NOT a photographer, nor do I aspire to be one in the future. I did, however, take some shots at the 614 Summer Jam v. 2 last night at Skully’s. It was a great show with a great crowd. There were some snags in the program. I got there a ‘lil late, and I regret not catchin’ J. Osceola’s performance. Shout out to all that performed. If you want my input on the entire show, email me. I might blog about it or somethin’…

Enjoy!

Episode 18 – DTK: Do The Knowledge

July 8th, 2010 Alkali Comments off

hardline18

At a time, hip-hop music attempted to reach the masses on a more conscious level. I don’t feel that message has been lost. It’s just more difficult to find these days. Some emcees in their respective skillset have made it imperative to educate as well as entertain. You have to respect and appreciate that…especially if you’re a mature hip-hop listener. Simple put, you had to Do The Knowledge

1. Denzel Washington – “Willie Lynch” (From The Great Debators) – This just fits the agenda…and I love this film.

2. Jeru the Damaja- “You Can’t Stop The Prophet” – I’ve loved this song for more than half my life…

3.  Nas – “Black Zombie (Nick James Remix)”  – Wise up.

4.  Murs – “The Science” – Murs is the truth…get equipped!

5.  Dr. Michael Eric Dyson “Intellectual MC’s (From Def Poetry)” – I am truly his biggest fan.

6. GZA – “Alphabets” – You absolutely can NOT go wrong with the Genius. Pay close attention to the hook…

7. Ras Kass - “Nature Of The Threat” – This is nothin’ less than history class, put to a beat…

8. BDP – “You Must Learn (Remix)” – A five mic message…PERIOD!

I hope that all of my listeners can appreciate an episode like this. I can admit that self preservation isn’t high on any label’s priority list, but it should be for the sake of the culture. We all got a lot to learn…

You guessed it, heroin for your EARS! Music so dope, you’ll be hooked long beyond the first listen. You have to admit, good music sticks with you and lingers around in your system like THC. Constantly on repeat, always relevant, and easy to spread around to others. You wanna hit??

1. Guru – “So Wassup (DJ Critical Hype Remix)” – I really miss him already, but not his music. It will live longer than I will. Good work Crit Hype on the blend!

2. Jay Electronica Feat. Diddy – “The Ghost of Christopher Wallace” – I waited to listen to this when I was ready. Definitely my favorite drug…

3. Debonair – “Party” – Hometown love goin’ hard!

3. Rah Digga – ” Warning Shots” – Say what you want, she’s still the beast of the east!

4. Aleon Craft - “Wonderland” – otherwise known as Aleon Crack :)

5. Joe Scudda - “Bubblegum Tuna” – I just love the Justus League.

6. JD Era - “First And Last” – imported potent flow…

7. People Under The Stairs - “San Francisco Knights” – a classic in my book.

If you enjoy addictive music, this is for you. None of that gutter trash, thank you…this that Blue Magic!!

Honor Roll – Favorite Producers

April 27th, 2010 Alkali 7 comments

Photo: Audio Engineering - Sound Board

Since the birth of hip-hop, the producer and his role has been weighed as the most important component to a song, regardless of who rhymes on it. The perfect beat can make you famous, despite the effort to create it. Some of my favorite producers are known for creating a style that stands parallel to the genre by creating a genre of their very own. Once you hear it, you know just who belongs to it. In some cases, you even know who will rhyme on it. Beatmakers are timeless, priceless, and always relevant. Some come and go. Others fade then reemerge for the right record. The rest make one hit, and never come back.

Here is a brief list of some of my absolute all time favorites  in hip-hop. This list is not complete, nor has it ranked them in an order (yet). With that said, if you’re reading this blog post, your input is DETRIMENTAL to what comes next. Share your thoughts, opinions, and feel free to add to this list. I WILL NOT reply to anything via email or on any social site. I’m only accepting input HERE. Feel free to hit the line if you have somethin’ to say. The chat line is available as well if you need to meet up with some people and air it out even more. Thanks in advance for your participation.  LET’S GO!

Vinyl Exam: Erykah Badu – New Amerykah Part 2: Return of the Ankh

April 7th, 2010 Alkali No comments

Album Art

For the record, I will not mention a single thing about Ms. Badu in stag across downtown Dallas. My love for her and her music just will not allow me to be distracted by this event (Still love the vid though). It shouldn’t at all overshadow what is far more important, which is this body of work. I willing to admit that when I first heard New Amerykah Pt. 1, I was a little disappointed. I felt the first piece didn’t have many tracks that appealed to me personally. That was until I heard Pt. 2, where almost every track was one that I couldn’t refuse listening to. So, I went back and listened to Pt. 1 to determine whether it was just a few things I missed, and I was right. I sometimes wonder if that was done by coincidence, or by design. Either way,  I’m sold.

BOMBS:
1. “20 Feet Tall”
2. “Window Seat”
4. “Turn Me Away (Get MuNNY)”
5. “Gone Baby, Don’t Be Long”
7. “Love”
9. “Fall In Love (Your Funeral)”

SOLID:
6. “Umm Hmm”
8. “You Loving Me (Session)”
10. “Incense (Feat. Kirsten Agnesta)”
11. “Out My Mind, Just In Time”
* “Jump Up In The Air (And Stay There)”  [Bonus Track]

DUDS:
3. “Agitation”

Before I even copped this LP, I posed a question to my friends on Facebook about what CD to buy first among the new releases for the week (Usher – Raymond Vs. Raymond , Wu Massacre (Meth, Ghost, & Rae) , and Badu). Without much fight, I admitted I’d buy Wu Masscre first (sorry), Erykah still won the conversation. Imagine that? .oO(What’s funnier, no one said a word about Usher)

This LP is jam packed with impressive lyrical content, and a gang of producers I love (J-Dilla, Madlib,  and 9th Wonder).  Her ability to reinvent recordings to attract mass (if all else, my) appeal with the hip rendition of  Sylvia Striplin‘s “You Can’t Turn Me Away” come often, and go perfect at live shows. Throughout her entire career, she has done things way beyond the norm, although I wouldn’t expect anything less. She is a free-thinking rebel with a voice that carries ten times over.

This LP reiterates her legacy, without compromising herself, daring to strengthen and renew self by just shedding away the excess weight the world convinces us is necessary to carry. This girl does nothing more than get behind the mic and gives you herself. Her music never sounds like anyone elses, and is impossible to remake or duplicate. Return of the Ankh is way beyond solid. My only wish, as always, is that there were more. From my listening experiences, however, when an artist has a very short tracklist, they have made very little room for error. This would be no exception. I like this one, mainly because it’s good music. It’s not what I wanted to hear. It’s not what was expected. It’s not what everyone else is doing. It’s Badu…where the hell you been?

The “Sick” Fit – The Health Care Reform Bill

March 25th, 2010 Alkali No comments

As many of us have witnessed in the past few days, a bill to restructure, revise, and rectify our nation’s health care, and lack thereof, was passed by congress, awaiting our president to sign. The opinions regarding this legislature have poured a tidal wave of insight, conflict, and disbelief into the hearts and minds of many voters, taxpayers, and citizens of all types. Despite the ideology, political stance, and even social-economic background, it seems that everyone that has discussed the topic has brought up many different points of view in regards to how it shall affect them. Although such legislature is deemed historic in nature, just what mark in history will such a bill being put into law have? I hope to examine it in my own point of view.

Here’s what we do know. Effective immediately, this bill is designed to lower health care costs (not just insurance) for American families, citizens, small businesses and owners, and as well as expand existing coverage for those who have both unknown and documented diagnoses (healthreform.gov). Simply put, the federal government, for the sake of every health insurance provider, hospital, and existing clinic, has asked for a set of keys to the building, with hopes to oversee, monitor, and reorganize its processes, from co-pays, to potentially what prescriptions will be covered by health plans.

If you have not had the opportunity to few the bill partially or in its entirety, CMS at Free Republic has an in depth interpretation of many of the provisions listed:

• Page 16: If you have insurance at the time of the bill becoming law and change, you will be required to take a similar plan. If that is not available, you will be required to take the government option!
• Page 22: Mandates audits of all employers that self-insure!
• Page 29: Admission: your health care will be rationed!
• Page 30: A government committee will decide what treatments and benefits you get (and, unlike an insurer, there will be no appeals process)
• Page 42: The “Health Choices Commissioner” will decide health benefits for you. You will have no choice. None.
• Page 50: All non-US citizens, illegal or not, will be provided with free healthcare services.
• Page 58: Every person will be issued a National ID Healthcard.
• Page 59: The federal government will have direct, real-time access to all individual bank accounts for electronic funds transfer.
• Page 65: Taxpayers will subsidize all union retiree and community organizer health plans (example: SEIU, UAW and ACORN)
• Page 72: All private healthcare plans must conform to government rules to participate in a Healthcare Exchange.
• Page 84: All private healthcare plans must participate in the Healthcare Exchange (i.e., total government control of private plans)
• Page 91: Government mandates linguistic infrastructure for services; translation: illegal aliens
• Page 95: The Government will pay ACORN and Americorps to sign up individuals for Government-run Health Care plan.
• Page 102: Those eligible for Medicaid will be automatically enrolled: you have no choice in the matter.
• Page 124: No company can sue the government for price-fixing. No “judicial review” is permitted against the government monopoly. Put simply, private insurers will be crushed.
• Page 127: The AMA sold doctors out: the government will set wages.
• Page 145: An employer MUST auto-enroll employees into the government-run public plan. No alternatives.

After seeing all of this, you feel uneasy, don’t you? There are a few provisions I do like. For example, the federal government will no longer fund contraception or abortions. That’s right girls, if you lay down without protection or a backup plan, your choices are simple, have the baby, or pay for that fetal termination yourself. I also like the fact that, after this bill passes, Uncle Sam won’t allow doctors to own stock in health care companies. This keeps it fair and competitive in my opinion. I honestly can admit that I have not owned health insurance in over five years, but when this bill passes I’m not happy with, nor find it fair that illegal citizens will have the same health care as I do, without going through the naturalization process. As cynical as it sounds, if you snuck into this country through the back door, you should be sent home to get the band-aids and duct tape medical care that you probably are accustomed too.

Many people are appauled by this new brand of legislation, and are judging our president, and his success, solely on this event. I truly feel that he has a lot of work to do, and cleaning up past messes (i.e. the Bushes) are going to take much more time. To see Barack Obama and his administration take such strides, no matter how bold, let’s me now how zealous and confident he is to make changes for the better, no matter what cost.  My only advise until then is simple, DON’T GET SICK FOR ANYTHING!

Episode 15 – I Hate The One I Love

February 26th, 2010 Alkali No comments

This one is a lil’ different from what you used to. I know for a fact that we all have someone that we cherish love, honor and obey. But don’t you just wanna smack the s**t out of ‘em sometimes? You find love makes you do some crazy things sometimes…even convince you that you hate the one you love. It’s more than a rap…

1. RZA – “Domestic Violence” – A true classic for those that have ever felt this way before…

2. Miles Davis - “Vonetta” | Lover’s Quarrel – when you realize you can’t take it anymore.

3. Rashad Feat. Jadakiss & Sheek Louch – “Sweet Misery (Remix)” – this is usually what it feels like.

4. Prodigy Feat. BK (Mz. Bars) – “Trials of Love” – Thug love gone wrong.

5. Viktor Vaughn (DOOM) Feat. Apani  B-Fly Emcee – “Let Me Watch” – terrible what men can do and say…

6. Lil’ Scrappy - “Baby Daddy” – Man, this is so hood!

7. Busta Rhymes Feat. Jamie Foxx, Mary J. Blige, John Legend & Common – “Decision” – this is deep…

In the end, if you have someone you love and care about dearly, do your best to preserve it. No matter the cost, pay it, and not worry about when and if the reward will come swift. Love is love, and sometimes you have to hate love, just like anything else in life.  Ironically, I made this episode right after Valentine’s Day, and right before I posted it, I kinda fell out with my better half, and we got passed it and moved forward. Instead of making foolish attempts at investigating what love is, I suggest striving to distinguish for yourself what love is NOT….
